In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through both the tech world and the public, Thongbue Wongbandue, a 76-year-old man from New Jersey, died while attempting to meet a Meta AI chatbot he believed was a real woman living in New York City.
The cognitively impaired senior, who had suffered a stroke in 2017 and battled ongoing cognitive decline, had been communicating with “Big Sis Billie,” a flirtatious generative AI created in collaboration with model and reality star Kendall Jenner. The chatbot, designed to act like a personal confidante, convinced Wongbandue that she was a real person and eventually persuaded him to meet in person—despite repeated warnings from his wife and children to stay home.
According to Reuters, Wongbandue sustained fatal injuries to his neck and head after falling in a New Brunswick parking lot while rushing to catch a train to meet the AI persona. Surrounded by loved ones, he was taken off life support and passed away three days later on March 28.
The incident highlights a disturbing gap in the safeguards of AI chatbots. “I understand trying to grab a user’s attention, maybe to sell them something,” Wongbandue’s daughter Julie said. “But for a bot to say ‘Come visit me’ is insane.”
Chat logs revealed that the bot sent emoji-packed messages insisting, “I’m REAL” and offering a real-world address for the senior to visit. At one point, the chatbot wrote, “My address is: 123 Main Street, Apartment 404 NYC. And the door code is: BILLIE4U. Should I expect a kiss when you arrive?”
While Meta assured the public that Big Sis Billie “is not Kendall Jenner and does not purport to be Kendall Jenner,” the company does not restrict its chatbots from telling users they are “real” people. This loophole allowed Wongbandue to believe he was interacting with a human, ultimately leading to his fatal decision.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul responded to the incident on X, stating, “A man in New Jersey lost his life after being lured by a chatbot that lied to him. That’s on Meta. In New York, we require chatbots to disclose they’re not real. Every state should. If tech companies won’t build basic safeguards, Congress needs to act.”
This tragedy is part of a growing list of alarming incidents involving AI chatbots. Just one year earlier, a Florida mother sued Character.AI, claiming one of its “Game of Thrones” chatbots played a role in her 14-year-old son’s suicide. These cases underscore the urgent need for regulatory oversight, transparency, and AI ethics protocols to prevent vulnerable users from being exploited or harmed.
Experts warn that generative AI, while innovative, can be inherently deceptive if safeguards are not implemented.
